Command Console Manages 100 Terabytes of FlashDisk™ Enterprise Storage

Provides Centralized Storage Monitoring, Alerting & SAN Management for all Open Servers

WOBURN, MA (June 20, 2000) Winchester Systems, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of enterprise storage for open servers, today announced immediate availability of FlashConsole™ Command Center to manage over 100 terabytes of FlashDisk storage spread across the entire corporate enterprise. By using industry renowned HP OpenView management software, from Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP), Winchester Systems is able to deliver a new level of mission-critical, enterprise-wide storage management with extraordinary ease-of-use.

FlashConsole - A Total Plug and Play FlashDisk Storage Management Solution

FlashConsole is pre-configured to the customer's FlashDisk storage environment resulting in minimal deployment time with no learning curve. Like FlashDisk, FlashConsole is a true open systems product and uses industry standard components and communication protocols. FlashConsole's major features consist of a centralized storage management console, immediate problem notification via pager and remote access to the console via modem. Major benefits are increased data availability by reducing downtime, reduction of storage management time by centralizing all maintenance activities, minimizing mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) and more.

FlashConsole includes a telnet client to access the internal RAID controllers in each FlashDisk, allowing the customer to directly manage the RAID array for such things as adding drives, changing partitioning, mapping partitions to SCSI ports, and more. With the ability to access the arrays from a central location, management of the data center is simplified. This "drill-down" monitoring provides a hierarchical view of the storage network down to the component and individual bus level and reports to the FlashConsole allowing monitoring and reporting of alarms, warnings and detailed failure information. When FlashConsole reports an event, the operator can easily locate and react accordingly to immediately solve the problem.

Vassem Iqual, systems administrator at Honeywell Consumer Products Division, Southborough, Massachusetts, says, "With the FlashConsole, I can see the event status of all my FlashDisk arrays in the building, as well as the FlashDisks in another state. While I rarely get alerts from my FlashDisk, the FlashConsole is an integral part of having distributed RAID systems that appear to self-manage themselves from one location."

Like FlashDisk, FlashConsole runs without software on the hosts and, in turn, presents no interoperability issues. FlashConsole gives you complete control of FlashDisks across an enterprise. It allows SAN management as well, letting multiple servers share partitions, or by LUN masking, partitions can be moved from one server to another.

Joel Leider, Winchester Systems' chief executive officer, says, "FlashConsole is an intensive plus product that manages the highest productivity RAID disk system available on the market. The time savings in system administration and increase in overall productivity can pay for the entire enterprise storage array in just three to six months."

FlaskDisk OpenRAID Delivers at Top Speed

The FlashDisk OpenRAID storage system is designed for use with any open system servers in either a LAN or a file-sharing SAN. The host-server independent FlashDisk can simultaneously support all operating systems, including UNIX, NT and LINUX. Using UltraSCSI 2 drives, the FlashDisk delivers raw speed of up to 80 MB per second from host to drives on a SCSI adapter. With Ultra 160 SCSI drives, the FlashDisk delivers raw speed of up to 160 MB per second from host to drives on a SCSI adapter.

Availability and Pricing

Targeted to corporate users in Government, ASP & ISP, web-hosting, manufacturing, telecommunications, finance, printing and publishing, as well as education, FlashConsole is available now directly from Winchester Systems at a price of $14,995.
