FlashDisk® OpenRAID™ Announcing 13,000 IOPS

BURLINGTON, MA. April 10, 2001 - Winchester Systems, as part of an ambitious enterprise storage product rollout plan, has introduced its ultra-high performance FlashDisk OpenRAID that delivers industry leading read/write performance using a new 64-bit end-to end design.fibre ports.

"Winchester Systems has moved the bar up for the entire enterprise storage industry again, exclaims Mr. Jerry Namery, the company's chief technology officer. "We already led the industry in performance with our current 32-bit model and now we've nearly doubled both the random and sequential data rates with our new 64-bit design."

Sustained Performance

The new FlashDisk OpenRAID 64-bit model delivers over 13,000 sustained I/O operations per second to the disks - nearly double the 7,000 sustained I/O operations per second delivered by the 32-bit model, which peaked at 9,779 I/Os per second. FlashDisk OpenRAID also delivers up to 121 MB per second sustained data throughput to the disks using two host ports for sequential applications such as file copying, report generation, data collection, video and audio streaming and backup applications.

End-to-End 64-bit RAID Array

The FlashDisk OpenRAID disk array is designed for speed and is 64-bit end-to-end. It features a 64-bit PowerPC processor, 64-bit data path to both the hosts and the disk drives and up to 8 disk/host channels each with burst transfer rate of 533 MB/sec. The maximum total cache aboard the RAID engine has been doubled to 512 MB. This large cache permits FlashDisk OpenRAID to perform at data rates above the published sustained data rates for fairly large bursts of data.

Capacity

The FlashDisk OpenRAID unit running the new 64-bit design holds up to 8 half-height disk drives of up to 73.4 GB each for a total current system capacity of 582.2 GB. For even higher speed using more spindles in parallel, FlashDisk OpenRAID uses 12 disk drives of 18.1 GB each for 217.2 GB. FlashDisk OpenRAID is designed to accept higher capacity disk drives as they are released. FlashDisk is now "drive-ready" for 181 GB half-height drives and 36 GB low-profile drives which increase capacity of the half-height model to 1.45 TB and the low-profile model to 434.4 GB.

"Open" Architecture

FlashDisk OpenRAID is a true hardware, plug-and-play storage solution, which emulates standard SCSI disks --eliminating proprietary host software, RAID managers and the need for software drivers or agents of any kind. It supports hardware RAID 1, 3, 5, 1+0 and RAID 15 for data protection. FlashDisk OpenRAID attaches via industry standard fibre channel and SCSI interfaces to host servers including SUN, HP, IBM and Intel.

Price and Delivery

FlashDisk OpenRAID models are available in rackmount and pedestal configurations. A FlashDisk OpenRAID unit with 8 disk drives of 73.4 GB each stores 587.2 GB and is priced at $39,994 including cables and UPS. The 12 drive models with 18.1 GB disk drives store 217.2 GB and are priced at $29,857 including cables and UPS. Delivery is 3 weeks.
