FlashSSD
- Solid State
Disk Speeds Applications
100% to 500%
Burlington,
MA. May 8, 2001
- Winchester Systems,
as part of an
ambitious enterprise
storage product
rollout plan,
has introduced
its ultra-high
performance FlashSSD
(Solid State Disk)
product to complement
its family of
high performance
FlashDisk OpenRAID
enterprise storage
products.
"Winchester
Systems now offers
a variety of SAN-capable,
high performance
enterprise storage
products that
can be "mixed-and-matched"
to each application
to provide the
highest possible
performance and
the highest return
on investment
for all mission
critical applications,"
according to Mr.
Joel Leider, the
company's chief
executive officer."
Sustained
Reliable Performance.
FlashSSD is a
non-volatile solid-state
disk product that
reliably delivers
a sustained and
constant 12,000
I/O operations
per second and
40 MB per second
data throughput.
This data rate
is consistent
for all types
of I/O including
all reads and
writes, all sequential
and random transactions
and for all large
and small block
transfers. It
is ideal for the
typical 1% to
5% of an application's
"hot files" that
account for 50%
or more of all
disk requests.
By moving a relatively
small percentage
of these hot files
to FlashSSD, disk
intensive applications
including OLTP,
database, e-mail,
messaging, e-commerce,
streaming video,
downloads, financial
and manufacturing
immediately run
100% to 500% faster
with no tuning
whatsoever. FlashSSD
provides an I/O
measurement tool
for Oracle database
users that pinpoints
Oracle's hot files.
Complements
FlashDisk OpenRAID
The company's
FlashDisk OpenRAID
provides exceptional
performance rivaling
SSD capabilities.
However, since
the actual data
must eventually
be written to
disk on FlashDisk
OpenRAID, and
writes take longer
than reads, I/O
performance to
RAID hardware
is data sensitive
and performance
naturally varies.
FlashSSD is uniquely
designed to provide
predictable and
steady high performance
on a consistent
basis for both
reads and writes
and thus it is
the device that
hot files such
as index files,
redo logs, temp
spaces, key tables,
buffer queues,
directories and
other persistently
used hot files
should be located.
When used in tandem
with FlashDisk
OpenRAID high
speed and bulk
storage models,
the family of
FlashDisk products
provides three
price/performance
storage alternatives
that can be used
in proper proportions
to optimize performance
while staying
within affordable
budgets.
High
Capacity, Non-Volatile
SSD Storage
The FlashSSD is
available in models
that range from
500 MB to 10 GB
of non-volatile
storage in a single
3U (5.25") high
rackmount unit.
FlashSSD is exceptionally
reliable and has
an MTBF rating
over 2 million
hours. To protect
application data
from loss during
a power failure,
FlashSSD is equipped
with a battery
backup and internal
hard disk drive
that backs up
and restores 5
GB of data in
just 4 minutes.
Upon power failure,
FlashSSD performs
an emergency cache
backup to hard
disk powered by
the internal battery.
When power is
restored, all
data is reloaded
into cache, all
transparently
to the application.
"Open"
Architecture
FlashSSD is a
true hardware,
plug-and-play
storage solution,
which emulates
standard disks
and does not require
software drivers
or agents of any
kind. FlashSSD
attaches via industry
standard SCSI
and Fibre Channel
interfaces to
host servers including
SUN, HP, IBM and
NT.
Price
and Delivery
A typical FlashSSD
model with 500
MB of storage
and SCSI interconnect
is priced at $20,200.
Delivery is 2
weeks ARO.
