In the military world where rugged products are needed, Winchester Systems offers standard rugged products that fit the bill most of the time. But what happens when the standard product is close but does not quite work in the designated environment? What happens when a legacy program needs hardware replacements that are no longer available and the alternative is a million dollars to recertify, retool and redocument?

Legacy Storage Hardware

   

A defense contractor needed replacement storage for a multi-peripheral unit in a very old legacy application. No vendor made such devices any longer. Winchester Systems was able to procure a supply of out-of-manufacture SCSI peripheral devices, utilize an inventory of SCSI device carriers and build a simple 5.25” (3U) high enclosure to contain them all. This saved untold cost and inconvenience plus significant rack space for the military in support of this program.

Legacy replacement unit is shown in a new enclosure housing five separate obsolete peripherals. This solution avoided the burdensome cost to rework an approved and field-proven system without changing any software.

US Navy Shipboard Airflow

Another defense contractor needed the RV-2500 RAID disk array for the US Navy for a shipboard application. However, the location did not permit frontal airflow.

The solution was to reroute the airflow from the sides and create a new blank front panel to replace the standard grill. Naturally the unit is painted standard US Navy grey.

Modified RV-2500 shows side airflow vents and solid front panel. Air flows in from large side vents, is redirected off the sealed front door, over the drives and out the rear as normal.
